Carlos Alcaraz: "I win because I smile. My English has improved!"

Carlos Alcaraz's adventure at the Roland Garros 2023 continues almost smoothly. The world number one struggled only in the second set but beat the Japanese Taro Daniel, an always insidious opponent, in four sets. The Spanish champion finished in four sets with the result of 6-1 3-6 6-1 6-2.

Alcaraz explained in the post-match press conference: "I'm really happy with the performance and the level I showed today. There are always problems during matches, today I faced problems like the wind but I put in a good performance.

I am happy with all this. My English? It has improved and I am happy with it. Tsitsipas says I'm always happy and smiling, also because he keeps winning? I always win because I smile and I think a smile is the key to everything, even in life!

Alcaraz then spoke about the atmosphere in a tournament like this, a tournament that sees him among the main favourites: "I like playing on this courts, and in general I love this tournament and this city. It's important for me to have fun and that's why I always smile."

Alcaraz on Shapovalov and weather conditions in Paris

Alcaraz will face Canadian talent Denis Shapovalov in the third round, an often tricky opponent: "I've never faced him even though we trained together in Barcelona.

Everyone knows his level, he's really a dangerous tennis player and has excellent shots. It will be a difficult match but I'm ready to face it and give my best. As I've said several times, I don't have time to think about the opponent, I always try to think about myself and my game, I want to play the game.

I want to enjoy the day off and then my team and I will think about the future." The tennis player concluded by returning to the windy conditions and said: "It's tough in particular conditions, but I can say that I am a tennis player who plays well in windy conditions.

I train in Vienna with a lot of wind and I'm used to playing in these conditions, now I can say that I've adapted to all of this."
