British tennis star Daniel Evans praised Roger Federer for being very humble and a "down to earth" type of person. Evans, 32, had a chance to hit with Federer on numerous occasions. Whenever Evans hit with Federer, the Swiss and his team were extremely nice.
"Yeah, him and his team are great to me. We practiced a bunch of times. Obviously I think two-and-a-half weeks once in Dubai every day. Yeah, it was great. Roger was cool," Evans said, per Sportskeeda. "Yeah, I think the biggest compliment I can give him is he was very, very normal, down-to-earth person who was obviously good in king-like status in the sport.
He treated me, and he treats everybody exactly like the normal bloke on the street to their mate. That was the biggest compliment I can give him. Obviously a very good practice partner to be able to practice with. Yeah, he was like his phone, would never go off out loud in a press conference."
Evans never defeated Federer
Over the course of his career, Evans clashed Federer four times.
The first meeting between Evans and Federer came at 2016 Wimbledon, when the Swiss handed the Briton a straight-set loss. In 2019, Federer earned a straight-set win over Evans at the Australian Open. That same year, Federer also handed Evans a three-set defeat at the US Open.
Last year, Evans and Federer clashed for the fourth and final time. After being out for a year, Federer made his return to competitive action in 2021 March, in Doha. In the Doha round-of-16, Federer edged out Evans 7-6 (8) 3-6 7-5.
Evans fell just short of beating Federer in Doha, but at least this time he managed to win a set against Federer. Evans never got a win against Federer, but having a chance to occasionally practice with the Swiss will certainly be something he will never forget.
