World No. 103 Francisco Cerundolo admitted he was a bit "pissed off" after losing to Casper Ruud but added it was still a great Miami campaign for him. Cerundolo, who was playing his first Masters semifinal, was easily beaten by Ruud as the Norwegian handed the Argentine a 6-4 6-1 loss.
“Obviously right now I'm a little angry, pissed off, but I have to take the whole two weeks into account. It's been two amazing weeks. I think I played my best tennis these two weeks. I won my first match of a Masters 1000, played my first main draw, reached the semi-finals.
I think I beat the best players in my entire career. All in all, these two weeks have been fantastic. I think I'll be a little happier in a few hours, but I must already be really proud of everything I've accomplished here," Cerundolo said after the match, per We Love Tennis.
Cerundolo collected a couple of upset wins
Cerundolo defeated Tallon Griekspoor in the first round and was up by a set and a break in the second round before Reilly Opelka retired their match. Then, Cerundolo stunned Gael Monfils in the third round and Frances Tiafoe in the round-of-16, respectively.
Cerundolo was 4-1 up against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal before the Italian retired their match. In the semifinal, Cerundolo couldn't pull off another upset. “It is a great feeling. I am standing here smiling,” Ruud said.
“I have had three tough loses in my previous Masters [1000] semi-finals and I thought today was a good chance to reach my first final. I started a little shaky but I was able to pull through and raise my level when I really needed to”.
Cerundolo came to Miami ranked outside the top-100. When the ATP rankings list gets updated on Monday, Cerundolo is expected to be ranked just outside the top-50.
