Maria Sakkari reveals she has been working with a mental coach for several years now and her advice is to never be afraid to seek professional help. Sakkari, 28, has achieved some of her best results in recent years. Now, world No 9 Sakkari explains that working with a mental coach helped her not only on the court but also off the court.

“I’ve been working for the last five or six years with a mental coach. It really changed the way I’m thinking. Not only on the court, but outside of the court. It’s made me a better person and a better human being.

For me, that’s above everything. If you can achieve and unlock things outside of the court, then you can for sure do better on the court. I think it was the greatest gift I’ve ever given to myself. I would suggest it to every single person.

Working with someone who specializes in that doesn’t mean you have a problem. It means you just want to become a better version of yourself. It’s a great investment that you can actually do," Sakkari on TV Azteca Deporters.

Sakkari bounced back impressively after a very rough moment

After surprisingly losing to Rebeka Masarova in the US Open first round and picking up her third consecutive opening-round loss at a Grand Slam, Sakkari opened up about her Slam struggles and hinted that she could take a break from tennis.

But Sakkari refused to just quit, instead continuing her season. Three weeks after a US Open disappointment, Sakkari went to Guadalajara for a WTA 1000 event. In Guadalajara, Sakkari claimed five straight-set wins. For Sakkari, it was her first WTA 1000 triumph and it came just three weeks after she contemplated taking a break from tennis because she was struggling.

Sakkari showed great mental strength in overcoming what happened at the US Open and then winning the biggest title of her career.
