Milos Raonic has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Masters and won't be making his first appearance at the tournament since 2020. On Thursday, Raonic concluded his Toronto Masters run after Mackenzie McDonald handed him a 6-3 6-3 loss in the round-of-16.
After concluding his campaign in Toronto, Raonic withdrew from next week's Masters event in Cincinnati. In Cincinnati, Raonic has played seven times. During the pandemic in 2020 - when the tournament took place in the bubble in New York - Raonic reached his first Cincinnati final.
That year, Raonic was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the final. Since then, Raonic hasn't appeared at the Cincinnati Masters. After being out of tennis for two years, Raonic returned to action in June.
Raonic withdraws from Cincinnati after exiting Toronto
On Thursday, 32-year-old Raonic might have played his final match in Toronto.
In recent years, Raonic has had lots of injury issues and that caused him to be sidelined for nearly two full years. As Raonic was exiting the court following his Toronto defeat, the crowd gave him a very loud round of applause.
“It’s one of the most meaningful things. I think it’s — I don’t know. I didn’t really get a glimpse of it. I got the sense of it just through the noise. And I think it’s probably the most special and endearing thing about these three matches, from Monday night to yesterday to today, through the ups and downs of it all, that energy that you can’t, like, quantify in any way or you can’t put a name to it.
But it just — you know, you can kind of just like close your eyes and wish you were kind of in that same scenario many times over. But I’m extremely grateful for that. And, you know, all the ups and downs over the last months and years, that makes it worth it far and beyond," Raonic said after his Toronto exit.
In his post-match press conference, Raonic couldn't confirm he would be back in Toronto when the next tournament edition takes place in 2025.
