San Diego Open

The San Diego Open is a men's and women's tennis tournament played on the hard courts at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, USA. It is part of the men's ATP Tour 250 circuit and the women's WTA 500 circuit.

naugurated in 1971 as the Virginia Slims of San Diego as a women's invitational tournament, the first edition of the 1971 Virginia Slims Circuit is played on the hard courts of San Diego's Morley Field Sports Complex. After this isolated edition the tournament is discontinued; restored in 1979, four editions are held under the name Wells Fargo Open.

Between 2016 and 2020, no major circuit tournaments are held in San Diego County. In 2021, a men's tournament on the ATP Tour is organized for the first time in San Diego, the San Diego Open held at the Barnes Tennis Center San Diego; is awarded with a license valid for one year only to compensate for cancellations of some tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The women's edition is not held that year. The emergency is repeated with other cancellations in 2022 and the San Diego Open is granted a new license valid for only one season. For the occasion, the women's tournament makes its return to the calendar, included in the WTA 500 category and held three weeks after the men's.
