The Chetumal Group at the WTA Finals 2023 has already established the two leaders, not so much for points but for the play expressed in the two matches staged. In Cancun, world number two Iga Swiatek beat Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets in her first match with the result 7-6, 6-0.

A difficult start for the Roland Garros champion, who found herself 2-5 down in the first set. For her demerits more than the merits of the Czech tennis player who in any case did not concede much to her opponent. However, Swiatek's comeback was not long in coming and the match moved to a tie-break.

Also in this case the beginning says Vondrousova and also in this case the end says Swiatek. A double fault by the number seven of the tournament gives the set to the Polish tennis player. Regaining confidence after a first set of light and shadows, Swiatek finds herself and does what she does best, slamming her rival with a bagel.

Gauff rips Ons Jabeur

The other leader of the group is this year's other Slam champion. This is Coco Gauff, who intends to close this season on the heels of a superlative finale. The American tennis player beats Ons Jabeur, the last qualifier for the WTA Finals in Cancun, with a result of 6-0, 6-1.

Third match out of four in which a bagel is made of this tournament, with the winner of the US Open protagonist because she is the first teenager to win a Finals match since Venus Williams. The result was never in question: three break points conceded and then saved, all in the last game of the match.

A domain that is also a child of numbers. Not a very high percentage of first serves, but the 81% of points won with the first serve, and 64% of points won with the second serve, guaranteed a certain superiority to an Ons Jabeur who was not in the best condition at the end of the season.

Gauff and Swiatek were the favorites in this group and are living up to the predictions. Not only the group: with Aryna Sabalenka, they are the main favourites for the final victory of the year-end Master. Below the highlights of Coco and Iga's wins:
