Colombia's Camila Osorio refused to quit after falling down to Elina Svitolina and it paid off as she produced an upset win over the top-seeded Ukrainian. Osorio, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 44 in the world, easily lost the first set but recovered to stun Svitolina 1-6 7-5 7-6 (5) in the Monterrey quarterfinal.
It was the second meeting between Osorio and Svitolina and the second victory for the Colombian over the Ukrainian. "I never gave up in any moment," Osorio said on court after beating Svitolina, per the WTA website. "I was 6-1 down, and I just kept fighting, and I kept grinding point by point.
I'm really proud of that."
Osorio produced a stunning comeback against Svitolina
Osorio had the first break point chances of the match but Svitolina saved two break points in the third game to go 2-1 up in the first set.
After saving two break points in the third game, Svitolina claimed back-to-back to also win the next four games and comfortably win the opener. Svitolina faced pressure in the sixth game second set but saved four break points to level the set at three games apiece.
Svitolina had her first break point of the set in the ninth game but Osorio saved a break point to go 5-4 up. After saving a break points in the ninth game, Osorio claimed the first break of the set in the 12th game to force a decider.
Svitolina bounced back at the start of the third set as he broke Osorio in the first and fifth games to open a comfortable 4-1 double-break lead. However, Osorio refused to give up after falling down by a double-break as she worked her way back into the set and ultimately forced a tie-break.
After blowing a double-break lead, Svitolina started the tie-break with a 3-0 lead. However, Osorio once again refused to quit as she won seven of the next nine points to overturn the deficit and book a three-set win. Osorio is playing just her third tournament of the season as she was beaten in the Australian Open first round before making the Guadalajara quarterfinal last week.
