Clara Tauson focused on improving game and not rankings in 2020

Danish junior Clara Tauson says she does not have a big ranking goal for 2020 and that she only wants to focus on improving her game, after winning her first event since the tennis shutdown at the ITF World Tennis Tour tournament at W15 Oeiras.

The 17 year old Tauson, from Denmark, won her second ITF World Tennis Tour title of the season and her seventh title overall, beating Spaniard Maria Gutierrez Carrasco 6-3, 6-2 in the final. The W15 Oeiras was the first event on the ITF World Tennis Tour after the suspension of the tennis circuit in March due to the global pandemic.

Clara Tauson says she is focused on improving her game right now

According to the ITF website, the 2019 Australian open girls singles champion, commented, "It's been a long break, but I played some national tournaments [over the summer] and I did pretty well, so coming here I knew I had a pretty solid game and form.

But it's been so long since I played the international tour and there were so many good players here that it was always going to be really tough. I'm extremely happy to have pulled through this week with a lot of tough matches”.

The Dane says she has been working with a new coach and is focused on improving her game rather than her ranking for now. "I don't really have a big goal for this year, just to get better. I started working with a new coach, so we had a lot of focus on improving everything there is to improve, my playing style and how I act, so right now we don't have a goal ranking-wise." Last year, Clara Tauson became the first Danish girl to top the ITF junior world rankings.

In February last year, she played for Denmark in the Fed Cup and in April, she played her first WTA tournament on a qualifiers wildcard at Lugano in Switzerland. She reached the main draw of that event and lost in the first round.

She is currently ranked No. 212 in the world, which is one spot below her career best ranking of No. 211. Tauson also won 3 of her 4 matches for Denmark earlier this year in the Fed Cup - as the Danes bounced back to Europe/Africa Group I a year after being relegated.
