Maria Sakkari entered the quarter-finals of the Linz Open on Wednesday. The no. 1 seed from Greece beat Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 36 minutes. Sakkari won 20 of 26 second-serve points and 16 of 31 points on return Gracheva’s second serve.
She faced six break points but saved the lot. She also converted three break points. The 27-year-old finished the match with 74 points to Gracheva’s 56. Sakkari now awaits Madison Brengle or fifth seed Donna Vekic. Brengle won her opening-round match on Wednesday against Austrian wildcard Julia Grabher, 7-6(2), 6-2 in an hour and 33 minutes.
Brengle converted four break points while saving three of her own during the course of the match.
Linz Open: Anastasia Potapova, Anhelina Kalinina claim wins for seeds
Third seed Irina-Camelia Begu was upset in the first round.
Clara Tauson defeated the Romanian 6-1, 6-2 in 75 minutes. Tauson won 84% of her first-serve points, 52% of her second-serve points and saved all four break points she faced. Begu won 54% of her first-serve points, 47% of her second-serve points and could save only two of the six break points she faced.
Looking to reach the quarter-finals, Tauson will play Camila Giorgi next. Meanwhile, eighth seed Anastasia Potapova reached the quarters with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Jule Niemeier in their second-round match-up. Potapova needed two hours and 44 minutes to get the win.
The world no. 44 will play either Anna-Lena Friedsam or fourth seed Anhelina Kalinina next. On Wednesday, both Friedsam and Kalinina won their respective round-of-32 clashes. Friedsam defeated fellow qualifier Sara Errani 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes.
The German saved 10 of the 14 break points she faced while converting seven break points on the Italian’s serve. The Ukrainian brought a halt to Alycia Parks’ Lyon Open highs as she posted a 6-2, 7-5 win after an hour and 50 minutes of play.
Lastly, Marketa Vondrousova also reached the quarter-finals at the Linz Open. The Czech won against Spain’s Rebeka Masarova 6-1, 6-1 in 59 minutes. She will play either Dalma Galfi or Eva Lys next.
