Wednesday was a day of upsets at the Copa Colsanitas as all five seeds who played their pre-quarter-finals crashed out of the event. Stefanie Voegele ousted top-seed Saisai Zheng 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 24 minutes to reach the quarter-finals.
Voegele converted six of the break points she had while saving five of the seven break points, she faced. Totally, for the match, Voegele won 58 points of the 98 points played in the match. Voegele will take on the winner between Maria Camila Osorio Serrano and seventh seed Tereza Martincova in the quarter-finals.
Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena upset the sixth-seeded Jasmine Paolini in their pre-quarterfinal clash. Arruabarrena dropped the opening set but made a comeback after an hour and 51 minutes of play to claim a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The match featured 11 breaks of serve, with Arruabarrena converting six of these. In the quarter-finals, the Spaniard awaits either Colombian wildcard Daniela Seguel or Frenchwoman Harmony Tan.
Copa Colsanitas: Sara Errani advances without let-up
In the second half, Sara Errani advanced to the last-eight with a 6-4, 6-4 win in an hour and 36 minutes.
The Italian converted all seven break points she had and saved eight of the 14 break points she faced. In the quarter-finals, Errani will either play fifth seed Tamara Zidansek and Giulia Gatto-Monticone. Nuria Parrizas Diaz upset the third-seeded Arantxa Rus to reach the first WTA quarter-final of her career.
The 29-year-old Spanish qualifier claimed a 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-1 victory in two hours and 13 minutes over the Dutchwoman. Only four points separated Parrizas Diaz from Rus – the Spaniard won 96 points while Rus won 92 points in the match.
Parrizas Diaz will face Viktoriya Tomova in the quarter-finals of the Copa Colsanitas. The Bulgarian upset the eighth-seeded Yafan Wang in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 28 minutes. Tomova won 71 points while Wang won 55 points for the match.
