Almost all seeds who played their second-round matches at the Poland Open on Thursday crashed out. The only seed to escape the exodus was ninth-seeded Nuria Parrizas Diaz. The Spaniard defeated lucky loser Amina Anshba of Russia 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 46 minutes.
Parrizas Diaz won almost 61% of her first-serve points while Anshba could only win around 45% of her first-serve points. The 30-year-old saved four of the seven break points she faced while converting six of the 14 break-point chances she got on Anshba’s serve.
Parrizas Diaz won 71 points while her opponent won 56. In the quarter-finals, Parrizas Diaz will take on Maryna Zanevska. The Belgian ousted Viktoria Kuzmova 6-2, 6-1 in their round-of-16 clash in just 65 minutes. Zanevska won 80% of her first-serve points.
On the other hand, Kuzmova managed to win just 57% points off her first serves. Zanevska saved the only break point she faced, which came in the second set. She went on to break her opponent twice across each set. Zanevska won 70 points to Kuzmova’s 37 points for the match.
Poland Open: Irina-Camelia Begu, Aliaksandra Sasnovich bid adieu
Katarzyna Kawa posted an upset over third seed Irina-Camelia Begu in the second round. The Pole won 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 37 minutes. Kawa converted five of the nine break points she had on the Romanian’s serve.
In comparison, she saved two of the four break points she faced. Kawa finished the match with 15 points more than Begu’s 56. For a place in the semi-finals, Kawa will play Ukraine’s, Kateryna Kozlova. Kozlova ousted sixth seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich in their pre-quarterfinal clash.
Kozlova dropped the opening set but made a turnaround to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in two hours and 15 minutes. In fact, among the five matches that were played on Wednesday, the Kawa-Sasnovich match was the only one that went the full distance of three sets.
Meanwhile, the last player to advance to the last eight at the Poland Open was Georgian Ekaterine Gorgodze. The qualifier won her second-round match against Varvara Lepchenko 7-6(5), 6-2, in an hour and 33 minutes. In the quarters, Gorgodze will play Kristina Kucova.
