Nao Hibino was upset on the first day of main draw play at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico on Monday. Slovakian Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova upset the fifth-seeded Japanese in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. In the second round, Schmiedlova will face home favourite, Renata Zarazua.
Zarazua, who received a wildcard into the main draw defeated Katarzyna Kawa of Poland 7-6, 6-0. Meanwhile, Australian Astra Sharma, who took on Briton Harriet Dart in a rematch of their meeting in the final qualifying round, replicated the result to advance into the second round.
However, while Sharma had defeated Dart in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the qualifying draw, her first-round victory over Dart was far from one-sided. The Briton took the lead in the match as she went up a set. However, Sharma rebounded into the match to eventually claim it 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) after two hours and 19 minutes of play.
Sharma will face either seventh seed Leylah Fernandez or Anna Kalinskaya in the round-of-16.
Guadalajara Open: Marie Bouzkova fights on

The Romanian won 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-2. In the second round, Buzarnescu will play second seed Marie Bouzkova. Bouzkova took down Irina Bara 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in their first-round meeting. Lauren Davis advanced to the second round after posting a 7-5, 6-4 win over Anna-Lena Friedsam.
The American qualifier will take on sixth seed Danka Kovinic next. The Montenegrin beat Varvara Gracheva 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 22 minutes in their first-round match. Italian qualifier Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Xiyu Wang to take her place in the second round of the Guadalajara Open.
After an hour and 37 minutes of battling, Cocciaretto won 6-4, 6-4. Either top-seed Nadia Podoroska or Mexican qualifier Giuliana Olmos could be Cocciaretto’s next opponent.
