Jasmine Paolini upset the ninth seed Nao Hibino in the first round of the Monterrey Open on Monday. The Italian fought back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 54 minutes. In the second round, Paolini will face Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
The Slovakian defeated Katie Boulter 6-4, 6-0 in their opening-round match. Eighth seed Ann Li, who was the only other seed to play her opening-round match on Monday, moved into the second round. The American defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 6-3, 7-5.
In the second round, Li will play Tamara Zidansek. The Slovenian defeated home favourite and wildcard Renata Zarazua 7-6(8), 6-3. Lauren Davis defeated Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif in the first round. The American lost the opening set but posted a comeback 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in an hour and 41 minutes.
Davis will play either sixth seed Anna Blinkova of Russia or Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic next.
Monterrey Open: Nina Stojanovic sets up Nadia Podoroska clash
At the bottom of the draw, Nina Stojanovic advanced to the second round with a win over Italian Martina Trevisan.
The Serbian needed an hour and 26 minutes to claim a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Next up for Stojanovic could either be Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya or second seed Nadia Podoroska of Argentina. At the top of the draw, Leylah Fernandez moved into the round-of-16.
The Canadian defeated American wildcard Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Up next for Fernandez could either be top-seed Sloane Stephens of the United States or Slovakian lucky loser Kristina Kucova. In the last first-round match of the day, Viktoria Kuzmova emerged as the winner.
The Slovakian defeated American Caroline Dolehide, who received a main draw wildcard, 6-3, 6-1 in their opener. Kuzmova awaits a Briton in either lucky loser Harriet Dart or fifth seed Heather Watson in the second round of the Monterrey Open.
