The Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova upset third seed Jessica Pegula in the second round of the Bad Homburg Open on Tuesday. Siniakova won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and nine minutes. Siniakova won about 70% of her first-serve points to the American’s 65%.
She also converted five of the seven break points she had while saving six of the nine break points, she faced. The world no. 76 finished with 102 points to Pegula’s 99 for the match. In the quarter-final, Siniakova will play Laura Siegemund.
The eighth-seeded Siegemund came through in the German derby against Tamara Korpatsch 6-2, 6-2, in an hour and 41 minutes. Siegemund made good of five of the 10 break point opportunities she had in the match while saving six of the seven break points, she faced.
The 55th ranked Siegemund finished with 70 points to Korpatsch’s 53 for the match. The last-eight match between Siniakova and Siegemund will be the second career meeting between the two. In their only previous match, in the final of the 2016 Bastad Open, the latter edged Siniakova in straight sets.
Bad Homburg Open: Victoria Azarenka off to a strong start
Siegemund’s compatriot, Andrea Petkovic, however, didn’t fare all too well in her round-of-16 match. Amanda Anisimova ended the run of the former world no.
9 6-1, 7-5 in just 64 minutes. Anisimova broke Petkovic four times while getting her serve broken once. She finished with 65 points to Petkovic’s 38. In the quarter-final, the American could either face another German in fourth seed Angelique Kerber or Russian Anna Blinkova.
In the sole first-round match at the Bad Homburg Open, second seed Victoria Azarenka ousted fellow Belarusian, qualifier Yuliya Hatouka 7-5, 6-0 in an hour and 17 minutes. Azarenka, who took a wildcard into the event, won almost 74% of her first-serve points and converted seven of the 11 break points she had. The former world no. 1 will take on Alize Cornet next for a place in the quarter-finals.
