Laura Siegemund, 35, took a moment to express gratitude to her boyfriend after losing to Iga Swiatek in the Warsaw final. Siegemund, who entered the week in Warsaw ranked at No 153 in the world, made her first WTA final since 2017 Stuttgart.
In 2022 June, Siegemund did win back-to-back ITF titles in Austria. In the Warsaw final, former world No 27 Siegemund didn't stand much of a chance as Swiatek ousted the German 6-0 6-1. “I want to thank my boyfriend. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a final or even won a tournament.
Finally, we got to this stage again. I think we can be really happy together. Thanks for being with me on this journey," Siegemund said after losing to Swiatek.
Swiatek gave no chance to Siegemund
Swiatek got off to a stunning start to the Warsaw final as she bageled the German in the first set.
In the opener, Siegemund didn't have a single game or a break point. After easily winning the first set, Swiatek also started the second set with a 3-0 lead. In the fourth game, Siegemund finally got on the board after holding her service game for the first time in the match.
However, it didn't change much as Swiatek won the next three games to complete a dominant straight-set win. "I'm sorry I couldn't put up more of a battle today, but it was a little bit too much yesterday. I tried my best, but the legs, they stayed at the hotel today.
But for me, it was really a great success anyway, it was almost a win for me to be a final at all. It's been a long time. On such a great stage with such great spectators. I just enjoyed it," Siegemund said after the match. Although Siegemund was easily beaten by Swiaten, it was still a very positive week in Warsaw for the German.
