There were a couple of noteworthy exits in the women’s draw on the third day of 2022 Wimbledon, on Wednesday. Second seed Anett Kontaveit, ninth seed Garbine Muguruza and 10th seed Emma Raducanu were the biggest names that fell.
Germany’s Jule Niemeier stunned Kontaveit, 6-4, 6-0 in their second-round match in just 58 minutes. Niemeier didn’t face any break points on her serve and converted all four break points that came her way on the Estonian’s serve.
She finished the match with 13 winners and unforced errors each. Kontaveit had seven winners and more than thrice as many unforced errors (24). This is the first time that Niemeier’s reached the third round of a Slam. The 22-year-old will play Lesia Tsurenko for a chance to reach the fourth round.
The Ukrainian prevailed in a derby against the 29th-seeded Anhelina Kalinina, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Caroline Garcia ousted British hopeful, Raducanu 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 26 minutes in their second-round clash. The score-line notwithstanding, the match in itself was too close with Raducanu doing her best to match Garcia point-for-point.
The Frenchwoman was particularly effective when it came to winning first-serve points and when approaching the net. She won 74% of her first-serve points and 80% of points at the net to Raducanu’s stats of 45% and 50% respectively.
Garcia’s aggressiveness also saw her come up with 25 winners and 20 unforced errors while Raducanu played catch up with 12 winners and eight unforced errors. In the third round, Garcia will play 33rd seed Shuai Zhang.
Zhang won against Marta Kostyuk 7-6(6), 6-2.
Wimbledon: Neverending season of losses for Garbine Muguruza
Meanwhile, Muguruza whose first-round match against Greet Minnen was suspended on Tuesday due to bad light lost to the Belgian in 61 minutes.
Minnen who was leading the 2017 Wimbledon titlist 6-4 on Tuesday when play was stopped wrapped up the second set, 6-0. Muguruza was let down by the 33 unforced errors she hit that were almost four times as much as the winners she had for the match – nine.
Minnen had 15 winners and 14 unforced errors for the match. On Thursday, looking to reach the third round at Wimbledon, Minnen will play Qinwen Zheng. Photo Credit: Wimbledon Twitter
