Poland Open: Anna Bondar reaches maiden quarter-final, Varvara Gracheva out

The last couple of first-round matches were played at the Poland Open on Wednesday alongside a handful of second-round matches. In the opening-round clash between Viktoria Kuzmova and seventh seed Varvara Gracheva, the latter was ousted.

The Slovakian won 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-5 after two hours and 33 minutes of play. Kuzmova won 75% of her first serve points to Gracheva’s 61%. She also converted five of the eight break points she had while saving four of the seven break points, she faced.

For the entirety of the match, Kuzmova won 111 points to the Russian’s 93. In the second round, Kuzmova will play Maryna Zanevska. The Belgian also came through her first-round match on Wednesday, defeating American lucky loser, Jamie Loeb 6-2, 6-0 in just 61 minutes.

Poland Open: Anna Bondar comes through to the last eight

Among the second-round matches, Hungarian qualifier Anna Bondar defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Bondar needed two hours and 23 minutes to complete a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1 victory.

Bondar was clutch for most parts of the match. She faced two break points, both of which came in the second set and was broken just once. Across the first and third sets, Schmiedlova didn’t get any chance to make inroads on Bondar’s serve.

Likewise, Bondar made good of five of the nine break point opportunities on Schmiedlova’s serve to come through. This is the first time the world no. 168 will playing the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament in her career.

For a place in the semi-finals, the 24-year-old will play German Tamara Korpatsch. Korpatsch got past Polish lucky loser, Weronika Falkowska in their second-round clash. The German won 7-5, 6-1 after an hour and 25 minutes. Meanwhile, the second-round match at the Poland Open between Kristina Kucova and 10th seed Irina Bara was suspended. At the time of its suspension, the Romanian was leading 6-3, 5-7, 4-2.
