Rothesay International: Garbine Muguruza, Yulia Putintseva book spots in pre-quarters

Garbine Muguruza advanced to the third round of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne on Monday. The fifth-seeded Spaniard needed an hour and 42 minutes to prevail 6-1, 7-6(7) against Magdalena Frech. The former world no.

1 won 76% of her first-serve points to Frech’s 61% and 47% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 50%. Muguruza lost her serve once in the match but went on to make good of three break point chances on Frech’s serve.

Post-match, Muguruza said, “The conditions were hard today. I feel like I fought hard against the wind, and I haven't played many matches on grass either. I could see today that if I didn't fight as hard as I can, I wasn't going to win”.

Rothesay International: Alison Riske exits

Looking to reach the quarter-finals, Muguruza will play either lucky loser Rebecca Marino of Canada or 12th-seeded Camila Giorgi of Italy next. Yulia Putintseva also made it through to the third round with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The 16th-seeded Kazakh needed an hour and 32 minutes to wrap up the win over the Spaniard. Putintseva will take on either Anhelina Kalinina or third seed Maria Sakkari next. Meanwhile, Magda Linette posted an upset in her second-round match against 17th seed Alison Riske.

The Pole outlasted the American, a finalist in Nottingham two weeks ago, 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(4) in three hours and nine minutes. Linette will play either ninth seed Elena Rybakina or Lesia Tsurenko for a chance to reach the quarter-finals.

Among the first-round winners at the Rothesay International was also Ajla Tomljanovic. The Australian defeated Aleksandra Sasnovich 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 on Monday. British players Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart also reached the second round with wins over Petra Martic and Madison Brengle respectively.
