Paula Badosa has shared some good news as the Spanish tennis star has avoided contracting the same injury that forced her to miss a good portion of the 2023 season.
After sustaining a spinal stress fracture in Rome, Badosa appeared in just one more tournament in the remainder of the 2023 season. At the start of this season, Badosa made her comeback to tennis and this week she was competing in her tournament of the year in Hua Hin, where she won her opener before retiring injured in her round-of-16 match against Diana Shnaider.
On the court, it looked like Badosa was struggling with a back injury and the tournament shortly after confirmed that was indeed what forced the former world No. 2 to retire. Instantly, fans grew concerned that Badosa was again dealing with the same injury that put a dark cloud on her 2023 season.
"Unfortunately, Paula Badosa had to retire due to a lower back injury. Get well soon, @paulabadosa!" the tournament announced after Badosa's mid-match retirement.
Badosa shares a very positive update
While Badosa is indeed dealing with a back injury, it's not the type of back injury that forced her to miss the majority of 2023.
"Good news all in all, I haven't relapsed the injury fortunately. I'm going to work with my team now 24/7 to get the inflammation down as soon as possible so I can compete soon. Thanks for all the messages. We are still struggling…" Badosa wrote on X.

Through her opening three tournaments of the year, Badosa is 3-3. In her first tournament back at the Adelaide International, Badosa suffered a first-round loss to Bernarda Pera.
After an early Adelaide loss, Badosa bounced back at the Australian Open, where she enjoyed a solid run and made the third round before losing to Amanda Anisimova. Playing in her first tournament since the Australian Open, Badosa came back from a set down to beat Lanlana Tararudee in the Hua Hin first round before being forced to retire in her following match to Shnaider.
It remains to be seen when Badosa will be ready to play again.
