Ons Jabeur stunned 11th seed Garbine Muguruza in the third round at Wimbledon on Friday. The 21st seed came from down a set to beat the 2017 champion 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 26 minutes. Muguruza gained the upper hand on Jabeur at the start of the match.
However, inconsistencies dotted her game as the set progressed. The Spaniard eventually prevailed in the set. Jabeur’s shot-making settled in the second set even as Muguruza’s ups and downs continued at the other end.
Muguruza saved four of the five break points she faced but the sole break of serve that Jabeur had was enough to help her take the set and push the match into the decider. The deciding set was entirely one-sided in favour of Jabeur.
Muguruza’s errors multiplied while the Tunisian’s shots produced winners from all parts of the court. Muguruza faced 17 break points, of which she saved 15 even as Jabeur didn’t face a single break point across the set.
The world no. 24 eventually served the match out in the eighth game.
Wimbledon: Madison Brengle exits, Madison Keys wins
Jabeur hit 44 winners, 12 more than Muguruza’s 32 and had 26 unforced errors, one more than the latter’s 27.
The difference between both players also came out at the net. While Jabeur won 82% points at the net, Muguruza managed to win merely 47% points. This is the first time in her career that Jabeur has reached the fourth week at Wimbledon.
She’ll play Iga Swiatek for a place in the quarter-finals next. Viktorija Golubic also reached her maiden Wimbledon fourth round. The Swiss defeated American Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-1 in their round-of-32 clash in 67 minutes.
Golubic hit 31 winners and 24 unforced errors while Brengle finished with 11 winners and 19 unforced errors. Golubic will next play another American, 23rd seed Madison Keys. Keys ousted 13th seed Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-3 in their third-round match.
