Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez marched into the quarter-finals in Monterrey on Wednesday evening with a 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 upset over fifth seed Sloane Stephens in the last match of the day. Fernandez needed two hours and five minutes to complete the win.
She even had a set point in the opening set tie-break before it went the American’s way in the end. This Fernandez’s second win over a top-50 player and the second time she has reached the quarter-finals this season – after Acapulco.
She will face the winner between top-seed, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina or Russian Olga Govortsova in the last-eight. In the other results of the day, ninth seed Marie Bouzkova made it to her first quarter-final in the 2020 season.
The Czech defeated Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 22 minutes. After the match, Bouzkova said, “I'm really happy with my performance today. I think I played well. The conditions couldn't have been any better today, even though it was a little windy in the end.
She's a great opponent and a very great fighter, so it wasn't easy to close out the match”. Bouzkova will face eighth seed Yafan Wang in the quarters. The Chinese player defeated Astra Sharma of Australia in their pre-quarterfinal clash 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 52 minutes.
Sixth seed Rebecca Peterson also reached the last-eight with a 7-6(2), 7-5 win over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko. The Swede will play either 10th seed Lauren Davis or Arantxa Rus in the quarter-finals. Photo Credit: Tennis Canada Twitter
