Top-seed Saisai Zheng advanced to the second round of the Copa Colsanitas in Bogota, Colombia on Monday. Zheng defeated American Usue Maitane Arconada 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 17 minutes. In the second round, the world no. 53 will play Stefanie Voegele.
Voegele defeated French qualifier Chloe Paquet 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round. Sixth seed Jasmine Paolini also moved into the round-of-16. The Italian defeated Kristie Ahn 6-3, 6-0 in just 59 minutes in the opening round. Paolini could play either Spanish qualifier Lara Arruabarrena or Colombian wildcard Jessica Plazas next.
Eighth seed Yafan Wang was the third seed to book her place in the second round on the opening day of play in the Colombian capital. Wang, who played against 484th ranked Colombian Emiliana Arango, who received a main draw wildcard, was made to work hard for her win.
The match lasted two hours and 55 minutes and Wang wrung out after her 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory.
Copa Colsanitas: Nuria Parrizas Diaz scripts history for herself
In the second round, Wang will play Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria.
Tomova won 6-2, 6-3 against Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam in their opener. Spain’s Aliona Bolsova ousted Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the first round. Bolsova won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and six minutes.
In the second round, Bolsova could play Italy’s Sara Errani or fellow Spaniard, the tournament second seed, Sara Sorribes Tormo. Lastly, in an all-Spanish clash, Nuria Parrizas Diaz got the better of Cristina Busca. Parrizas Diaz, who qualified into the main draw, claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win in an hour and 21 minutes.
This is not only Parrizas Diaz’s first victory in the main draw of a WTA event but the Copa Colsanitas is the first WTA event in which she’s made it to the main draw. In the second round, Parrizas Diaz will play either Irina Bara or third seed Arantxa Rus.
