Emma Raducanu out of Madrid due to injury, set for top-100 exit

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to an injury in her right hand. Raducanu, 20, was scheduled to play qualifier Viktoriya Tomova in the Madrid first round on Wednesday. Just hours before the match, Raducanu pulled out of the tournament.

Raducanu, ranked at No 85 in the world, made the round-of-16 in her debut at a WTA 1000 event in Madrid last year.

Now that Raducanu won't defend her Madrid points, she is set to leave the top-100.

Raducanu has been troubled by a wrist injury

Since last year, Raducanu has been hampered by a wrist injury. In late 2022, Raducanu decided to end her season a bit prematurely so she could address the wrist injury.

Raducanu was able to start her 2023 season in time but her wrist injury reappeared once again. After suffering a Miami Open first-round loss to Bianca Andreescu, Raducanu said she needed to figure out a long-term solution for her wrist injury.

“It’s something I’ve been managing for some time. I just need to review after this tournament really and figure out what my next steps are. We have been managing it, keeping on top of it. I’m able to play in the short-term.

But the current solutions aren’t very viable long-term," Raducanu said after exiting Miami. Also in Miami, Raducanu said she was skipping the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers because she was advised by her medical team not to from hard to clay in a short time.

“Because of my existing injuries, the best medical advice was to not switch surfaces at such short notice. So that’s what I’ve been told. Of course I would love to play the Billie Jean King Cup. It’s just this scenario is not the best for my body.

I really need to look after myself and do what’s best for me on the match court," Raducanu explained. It remains to be seen if Raducanu will be able to compete in Rome.
