China’s Xiyu Wang caused the biggest upset at the Thailand Open in Hua Hin, on Tuesday with a straight-sets upset over second seed, Croatia’s Petra Martic. Wang won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 28 minutes. At the bottom half of the draw, Wang will play Austria’s Barbara Haas who defeated Japanese qualifier Chihiro Muramatsu.
Haas came from a set down to beat Muramatsu 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 45 minutes. Romanian Patricia Maria Tig upset the sixth-seeded Yafan Wang of China 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(5) in two hours and 13 minutes. Tig will take on another Chinese player, Xiaodi You.
You got past Australian qualifier Ellen Perez in their first-round match on Monday. In the all-Chinese clash between Shuai Peng and Yue Yuan, Peng came through 6-1, 6-0 in just 47 minutes. She awaits the winner between fifth seed from Poland Magda Linette and Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko in the pre-quarter-finals.
Chinese Taipei’s En-Shou Liang who qualified into the main draw defeated China’s, Xinyu Wang. Liang won 6-2, 6-0 in 52 minutes. Liang set up a showdown against fourth-seeded Chinese player Saisai Zheng who defeated Serbian Natalija Kostic in their opening-round match on Monday.
In the top half of the draw, Chinese players, third seed Qiang Wang and seventh seed Lin Zhu won their respective openers. Wang defeated compatriot Xinyun Han 6-1, 6-1 in a minute short of the hour mark. Zhu won against Russian Varvara Flink 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes.
Lastly, the lone Indian woman in the singles draw, Ankita Raina lost her first-round match to Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa. Raina won the opening set but lost the latter two sets in a brutal fashion. Kawa won the match in an hour and 40 minutes 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Kawa will play the third-seeded Wang in the round-of-16.
