Citi Open: Victoria Azarenka, Emma Raducanu victorious; advance to pre-quarters

Victoria Azarenka took her place in the round-of-16 of the Citi Open in Washington DC on Tuesday. The former world no. 1, seeded fourth this week, beat Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-0 in an hour and 27 minutes. Azarenka won 77% of her first-serve points and 70% points on return on the Ukrainian’s second serve.

She saved seven of the nine break points she faced while converting six of the 11 break points that came her way on Yastremska’s serve. In the second round, the two-time Australian Open champion will take on Tereza Martincova.

The Czech defeated China’s Xinyu Wang, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes. Wang’s compatriot, Xiyu Wang, however, fared better against Tatjana Maria in their first-round clash. Wang defeated the 2022 Wimbledon semi-finalist 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 26 minutes.

In the second round, she’ll play Donna Vekic.

Citi Open: Emma Raducanu gets things underway

Second seed Emma Raducanu also moved into the second round in the American capital with a 6-4, 6-2 win over American qualifier, Louisa Chirico.

The Briton needed an hour and 27 minutes to wrap up the win. The 2021 US Open champion won 77% points on both her first and second serves. She saved two of the three break points she faced while converting four of the 10 break points that came her way on her opponent’s serve.

Looking to enter the quarters, Raducanu will play Camila Osorio. The Colombian beat 2020 Australian Open champion, wildcard Sofia Kenin in their opener, 7-6(2), 6-1 in an hour and 28 minutes. Meanwhile, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic ousted 2017 US Open champion, Sloane Stephens in their round-of-32 clash.

Tomljanovic won 6-1, 6-4 in 68 minutes and will take on Liudmila Samsonova. Stephens’ compatriot, Madison Brengle also exited in the first round. Anna Kalinskaya beat Brengle 6-3, 6-0 and will play third-seeded Simona Halep next.

Lastly, Andrea Petkovic posted the sole upset of the day at the Citi Open. The German defeated ninth seed Clara Tauson 6-2, 6-2 in 69 minutes in their opener and will play Rebecca Marino next. Photo Credit: Citi Open
