Hungarian Grand Prix: Maria Timofeeva ousts Diana Shnaider; Amarissa Toth exits

Diana Shnaider was shocked in the second round of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Thursday. Maria Timofeeva needed just 57 minutes to pocket a 6-1, 6-1 win over the 19-year-old. Timofeeva won 72% of her first-serve points and 50% of her second-serve points.

She also won 67% and 87% points on return on Shnaider’s first serve and second serve respectively. The 19-year-old, ranked 246th in the world, also came up with a positive differential of eight with the 18 winners and 10 unforced errors she made.

This is the first time in her career that Timofeeva’s reached the quarter-finals of a WTA event. In fact, this is the first season in which she’s played on the main WTA tour. This week in the Hungarian capital, Timofeeva lost in the second round of qualifying to Czech Anna Siskova but made her way into the main draw as a lucky loser.

Next, looking to keep her good streak going, Timofeeva will play Kaja Juvan in the quarters.

Hungarian Grand Prix: Nadia Podoroska storms into last-8

Meanwhile, Siskova lost in her second-round match against ninth seed Nadia Podoroska.

The Argentina took 73 minutes to post a 6-3, 6-0 win over the world no. 123. Podoroska faced two break points in the opening set and did drop her serve once in the set. She was, however, in better control over the proceedings in the second set.

She won all seven points played on her first serve and five of seven points played on her second serve. She also won eight points on return on Siskova’s first serve and all four points on return on the latter’s second serve.

She didn’t face any break point in the set and converted three of four break points on Siskova’s serve. Podoroska will play sixth seed Elina Avanesyan next. Avanesyan beat Hungary’s Anna Bondar by the same score-line as Podoroska in 76 minutes.

Lastly, Kateryna Baindl got past another Hungarian, Amarissa Toth in their second-round clash at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Ukrainian won 6-3, 6-1 and will play yet another local, Fanny Stollar. Stollar’s now the only home player left in the draw.
