Coco Gauff advanced to the quarter-finals at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma on Wednesday. The third-seeded American lived up to her billing and posted a strong 6-2, 6-3 win over Italian player Camila Giorgi in their round-of-16 clash in just 71 minutes.
Gauff won 81% of her first-serve points to Giorgi’s 57% and converted five of the 12 break points she had on the latter’s serve. She also saved three of the four break points she faced. Totally, for the match, Gauff finished with 64 points to Giorgi’s 46.
In the quarter-finals, Gauff will play fifth seed and fellow American Amanda Anisimova. The two, who contested the US Open junior final in 2017, will play each other for the first time on the WTA marking the start of a new generational rivalry.
Anisimova had previously won against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Emilia-Romagna Open: Petra Martic highest seed in the draw
The second quarter-final in the top half in Parma will be played between Katerina Siniakova and eighth seed Caroline Garcia.
While the Czech had already reached the last-eight, Garcia beat Anna-Lena Friedsam on Wednesday 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in the bottom half, Sara Errani will play Sloane Stephens for a place in the semi-finals.
The Italian moved into the quarter-final after her opponent, the seventh-seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo withdrew from their match in the third set after sustaining an injury to her right leg. At the time of the Spaniard’s decision to stop play, the scores were tied at two games apiece in the deciding set.
Prior to that, Sorribes Tormo had won the opening set 6-4 while Errani had claimed the second 7-5. The last two quarter-final berths at the Emilia-Romagna Open went to the sixth seed Qiang Wang and the second seed Petra Martic.
The Chinese, ranked 48th in the world, ousted Italian qualifier Martina di Giuseppe 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. The Croatian, who’s ranked 25th, meanwhile, defeated Russian lucky loser Liudmila Samsonova 7-6(5), 6-3 in their round-of-16 match.
