2020 Roland Garros: Iga Swiatek powers into 1st Major semi-final

Iga Swiatek continued her winning ways as she reached the semi-finals of 2020 Roland Garros late on Tuesday. The Pole halted Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan’s run 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 18 minutes. Unlike in her match against Simona Halep, it was a slow start for the 19-year-old who fell behind a break and trailed Trevisan 3-1.

However, she recovered well in time to not only get the break back but win the next 11 games (of the 12 played) to pocket the win. Swiatek won 78% of the points she hit at the net to Trevisan’s 53%. She had 20 winners and 19 unforced errors to her opponent’s 16 winners and 20 winners.

For the match, Swiatek finished with 64 points to the world no. 159’s 45.

2020 Roland Garros: Iga Swiatek milestone momentum

Analysing her performance in the post-match press conference, Swiatek said, “I just knew that I'm not going to play as perfect as with Simona.

On my level, it's impossible to keep that level of consistency. I just knew that I'm going to make some mistakes at the beginning because of the conditions. I just stayed really down-to-earth and really positive. I wanted to be aggressive from the beginning so I can lead on court.

I did that pretty well”. Continuing, she added, “It was kind of stressful. I wasn't thinking that I'm playing quarter-final of a Grand Slam. I just kept doing everything I did before. I had to warm up three times. Martina had the same situation, so it was OK with me.

It was harder being on court today because the conditions were pretty tough. It was really windy. The wind was coming from the side. You had to change your game every break. I needed some time to get used to that. I did that pretty well after, I don't know, 15 minutes”.

Swiatek is the first female tennis player from Poland to reach the semi-finals of the French Open. Back in 2013, Agnieszka Radwanska was the first woman from the country to reach the quarter-finals in Paris. Meanwhile, in the semi-finals, Iga Swiatek will play another qualifier and fellow first-time semi-finalist for a chance to reach the final of 2020 Roland Garros. Photo Credit: Roland Garros Twitter
