Cori Gauff blamed "too many errors on forehand and backhand" on a shock loss suffered to Sofia Kenin in her Wimbledon opener. Gauff, ranked at No 7 in the world, was upset by 128th-ranked Kenin 4-6 6-4 2-6. After the match was over, Gauff admitted she knew it was going to be a tough opener but noted the loss still left her feeling very frustrated and disappointed.
"Right now I'm very frustrated and disappointed. So, yeah, I think it makes me want to work even harder. I feel like I have been working hard, but clearly it's not enough. I have to go back to the drawing board and see where I need to improve and how to do the right drills to do that.
I mean, I knew it was going to be a tough first round for me. I tried my best, but it wasn't enough. I think I have a lot to work on if I want to improve from this," Gauff said.
Gauff on the loss to Kenin: Too many errors on my side
"Definitely taking care of my service games.
I do think I'm a better server than her, but I think she took care more of the plus-ones and plus-twos a lot better than I did. Obviously my forehand. I mean, being more aggressive on those shots. I think I made too many errors on my forehand and backhand today," Gauff explained.
In the third game of the match, Kenin broke Gauff and then held on to her service for the remainder of the first set to clinch the opener. After losing the first set, Gauff started the second set with an early 3-0 lead but it didn't take long before Kenin got the break back.
In the 10th game - when Kenin was serving to stay in the second set - Gauff broke Kenin to send the match into a third set. In the decider, Kenin broke Gauff in the first and seventh games en route to completing a three-set win.
