Copa Colsanitas: Tatjana Maria's a twice champion in Bogota

Tatjana Maria retained her Copa Colsanitas trophy with success. The German beat Peyton Stearns 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and three minutes in their final on Sunday. Stearns put in 72% of her first serves to Maria’s 59%.

However, both players won 67% of their first-serve points. Both players also won 54% points off their respective second serves. In terms of break points, Maria faced five break points across the match. Of these, one came in the first set and Maria saved it.

Of the four she faced in the second set, the 35-year-old was able to save only one. She didn’t face any break point in the deciding set. The second set also saw Maria’s distraction prove to be costly for her as her 21-year-old opponent came from down a break to clinch the set and level the match.

In the final set, Maria won 84% of her first-serve points. She also needed just the one break of serve to claim her second consecutive title in the Colombian capital.

Copa Colsanitas: Tatjana Maria's reigning place

Including this match, Maria’s now gotten 12 straight wins at the Copa Colsanitas, going back to her maiden title there in 2022.

That year, she made it to the main draw as a qualifier and then went all the way to collecting the title (b. Laura Pigossi). In winning the title two years straight, Maria now joins Colombian Fabiola Zuluaga as the only other player to win back-to-back titles in the tournament.

Zuluaga won four titles in this tournament, the first of which came in 1999. Her last three titles in the event came from 2002-04. Meanwhile, despite losing the Copa Colsanitas title, Peyton Stearns had a couple of memorable takeaways for herself.

Stearns not only made it to a career-first WTA final but on Monday, she also broke into the top-100 of the WTA singles rankings for the first time in her career. The Ohioan’s now ranked 89th in the world. However, Tatjana Maria, despite her title haul fell five places in the rankings to the 71st place. Photo Credit: Tennis Magazin Twitter
