World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was absolutely dominant in her Warsaw opened and after said it was "extraordinary" to get off to a strong start to her debut at the Poland Open. Swiatek, 21, made a light work of fellow Pole Magdalena Frech 6-1 6-2 to progress into the Warsaw last-16.
Swiatek, who was born in Warsaw, didn't feature at the inagurual edition of the Poland Open, which was held last year. "For sure playing in your hometown with all that crowd is pretty extraordinary," Swiatek said after making her Warsaw debut, per the WTA website.
"I didn't get a chance to play many tournaments in Poland so for sure I needed extra focus and determination to come here and stay in the zone and not let my head think about other stuff."
Swiatek crushed Frech
The two players were tied to one game apiece in the opening set, before Swiatek claimed back-to-back breaks and won the next five games to win the opener.
After the opening three games of the second set, Frech had a 2-1 lead. Just like it was the case in the frst set, Swiatek then went on a big run as she won the next five games to complete a straight-set win in an impressive style.
"I'm happy that I was solid today because Magda is not an easy opponent. From the beginning I wanted to put pressure on her and I did that pretty well. I'm pretty sure with our styles the result may be different on different surfaces, for example, grass.
But here I didn't have a problem coming back with my topspins," Swiatek explained. Swiatek's run of 37 wins came to an end following a shock Wimbledon third round loss to Alize Cornet. After Wimbledon, Swiatek took a short break and then did a training block.
Now, Swiatek is playing again and she was absolutely dominant in her first match post-Wimbledon. Swiatek will be playing 146th-ranked Gabriela Lee for a place in the Warsaw quarterfinal.
