Guadalajara Open: Nadia Podoroska, Eugenie Bouchard start with wins

Top-seed Nadia Podoroska needed three sets and two hours and 20 minutes to win against Mexican qualifier Giuliana Olmos in her opener at the Guadalajara Open on Wednesday. The Argentine, semi-finalist at the 2020 French Open, claimed a 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-2 victory.

In the second round, the world no. 45 will play another qualifier in Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Slovenian Tamara Zidansek and Cathy McNally will take on each other in the second round.

Zidansek posted an upset over third seed Anna Blinkova in the first round. The Slovenian won 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 24 minutes. McNally took the last win of the day by defeating fellow American, wildcard Katie Volynets 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and five minutes.

In the ninth game of the deciding set, Volynets saved a couple of match points forcing McNally to serve out the set. In the 10th game, McNally faced two break points for a break back for five-all in the set. However, she squashed them successfully en route to ending the match on her terms.

Eugenie Bouchard and eighth seed Kaja Juvan completed the last pre-quarter-final line-up in the top-half. In her opener, the Canadian, who received a main draw wildcard, needed three sets to beat American qualifier Caroline Dolehide.

Dolehide took the lead in the match but Bouchard, the 2014 Wimbledon finalist, fought back to post a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback win in an hour and 44 minutes. Meanwhile, the 91st ranked Juvan defeated Aliona Bolsova in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(7) in an hour and 47 minutes in their opener.

The two seeds who played their respective openers in the bottom half of the draw made their way safely into the second round. Fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated Greet Minnen 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 19 minutes.

In the second round, the 70th ranked Spaniard will play Swiss qualifier, Leonie Kung. Kung defeated Nina Stojanovic 6-2, 6-3. Seventh seed Leylah Fernandez beat Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
