Poland Open: Anna Blinkova upset; Weronika Falkowska's huge turnaround

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova ousted the fifth seed Anna Blinkova in the first round of the Poland Open in Gdynia on Monday. The Slovakian won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 against the 83rd ranked Russian in an hour and 35 minutes.

Schmiedlova failed to save both break points she faced and converted five of the 12 break points she had. She won 71 points for the match to her opponent winning 56. In the second round, Schmiedlova will take on Hungary’s Anna Bondar.

Bondar, who qualified for the main draw, defeated Russian wildcard Valeriia Olianovskaia in their round-of-32 clash. Bondar won 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 47 minutes. The world no. 168 won 79% of her first-serve points to Olianovskaia winning 58% points off her first serves.

She also made good of four of the eight break points she had on the Russian’s serve while saving eight of the 10 break points, she faced.

Poland Open: Weronika Falkowska gives home fans a big reason to cheer

At the bottom of the draw, Polish lucky loser Weronika Falkowska beat Ukrainian qualifier, Kateryna Bondarenko, 6-0, 6-2 in their first-round match.

The 396th ranked Falkowska needed just 55 minutes to complete the win. Incidentally, the Pole had lost to Bondarenko in the final round of qualifying before getting a chance to compete in the main draw after numerous withdrawals.

In the second round, Falkowska could play either Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch or 11th seed Belarusian, Olga Govortsova. Meanwhile, Falkowska’s compatriot, Urszula Radwanska didn’t have a great outing at home.

Slovakia’s Karolina Kucova defeated Radwanska, who received a main draw wildcard, 6-2, 6-1 in 65 minutes in their first-round encounter. In the second round, Kucova will play Irina Bara. The Romanian, seeded 10th in the draw, was the only seed to make it to the second round on Monday.

Bara won against Italian qualifier Federica di Sarra 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 after two hours and 38 minutes of play. Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova also reached the second round of the Poland Open. She defeated American wildcard Katie Volynets 7-6(3), 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes. In the second round, Kozlova could play either Polish wildcard Weronika Baszak or sixth seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
