Guadalajara Open: Hip injury calls time on Emma Raducanu's Mexican odyssey in 1R

Emma Raducanu, the top seed at the Guadalajara Open, had to retire in her opening-round match against Australian, Daria Saville. The Briton suffered an injury to her left hip that prompted her mid-match retirement. Saville was leading 5-7, 7-6(4), 4-3 at the time of Raducanu’s retirement.

Both players had, however, been playing for three hours and 36 minutes when Raducanu stopped the match. As of now, this is the longest match on the women’s tour in the 2022 season. Meanwhile, following Raducanu’s exit, the event’s also lost both of its top seeds, with the second seed Madison Keys losing her first-round match on Monday.

Saville will now play Caroline Dolehide in the second round. The American qualifier ousted China’s Lin Zhu 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes.

Guadalajara Open: Sara Sorribes Tormo and Camila Osorio win in straights

Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo began on a successful note in the Mexican event.

The third-seeded Sorribes Tormo, who’s the highest seed left in the draw, defeated American wildcard, Katie Volynets 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. The world no. 32 needed two hours and six minutes to complete the win. For a place in the quarter-finals, Sorribes Tormo will clash against either Magdalena Frech or Mexican wildcard, Renata Zarazua.

Fourth seed Camila Osorio also moved into the second round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova. The Colombian needed an hour and 22 minutes to wrap up the proceedings. Osorio will take on Hailey Baptiste for a chance to reach the quarters.

The American qualifier came through against fellow qualifier, Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 14 minutes. Xinyu Wang and Chloe Paquet also took their places in the second round of the Guadalajara Open. The Chinese got past Hungarian Panna Udvardy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 while the Frenchwoman beat Spanish qualifier, Rebekah Masarova, 7-5, 7-5.
