Monterrey Open: Defending champ Leylah Fernandez through to 2R

Second seed Leylah Fernandez advanced to the second round of the Monterrey Open on Monday. The Canadian southpaw, who’s defending the title in Mexico this week defeated Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova, 6-2, 6-2 in 68 minutes.

Fernandez won 75% of her first-serve points while the Slovakian won 50%. The 2021 US Open finalist won 57% of her second-serve points to her opponent’s 44%. While Fernandez dropped her serve once in the match, she also went on to break Schmiedlova’s serve five times to reach the second round.

For a place in the quarter-finals, Fernandez will now play either Qinwen Zheng or Italian lucky loser, Lucia Bronzetti.

Monterrey Open: Seeds make it through the openers

Fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo also took her place in the second round.

The Spaniard needed three hours and three minutes to get the better of Kamilla Rakhimova, 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-1. Sorribes Tormo will play French qualifier, Harmony Tan next. Tan advanced to the second round after her first-round opponent, Mexican wildcard, Renata Zarazua retired in their match with a stomach illness.

Tan was leading Zarazua 6-0, 1-0 at the time of the latter’s retirement. Another seed who reached the second round on the opening day’s play in Mexico was Camila Osorio. The Colombian, who’s seeded fifth in the draw, beat Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-3, 7-6(6) in an hour and 37 minutes.

Osorio will play Mexico’s Marcela Zacharias for a spot in the quarters. Zacharias who received a main draw wildcard, defeated fellow wildcard, American Emma Navarro, 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3 in their first-round clash. Viktoriya Tomova also reached the second round with a 6-4, 6-0 win over fellow qualifier, France’s Diane Parry.

The Bulgarian awaits either top seed Elina Svitolina or Anastasia Potapova next. Britain’s Heather Watson and Brazilian, Beatriz Haddad Maia also reached the round-of-16 at the Monterrey Open. Watson defeated German qualifier, Jule Niemeier, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(4) while Haddad Maia won against Panna Udvardy, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In the second round, Watson will play either Misaki Doi or Nuria Parrizas Diaz. Meanwhile, Haddad Maia will take on either Ann Li or Xinyu Wang.
