Tennis - American interest in the US Open junior girls singles draw came to an end on Saturday as both Katerina Stewart and Caroline Dolehide were beaten in the semi-finals. 17-year-old Stewart was beaten by Ukranian Anhelina Kalinina, the no.
9 seed, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in the first girls semi-final while 16-year-old Dolehide was beaten by unseeded Czech junior Maria Bouzkova 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, the girls doubles title was won by Ipek Soylu of Turkey and Jil Belen Teichmann of Switzerland, who defeated Vera Lapko of Belarus and Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia in a super tiebreak, 5-7, 6-2, [10-7].
American junior Francis Tiafoe also had a bad day at the office, as the 16-year-old was beaten by fifth seed Quentin Halys of France. Tiafoe held two matchpoints late in the third set but eventually went down 6-2, 3-6, 7-6. Halys will meet Australian Omar Jasika in the boys singles final.
