Belinda Bencic, 26, feels her forehand, service and mentality have never been better. Bencic, a former world No 4, has made three finals this year and twice she has made it all the way. Although world No 15 Bencic hasn't won a Grand Slam this year, she feels her game is trending in the right direction and wants to put herself in a position to contend for the biggest titles on a regular basis.
After claiming a 6-1 6-4 win over Lauren Davis in the Washington round-of-16, Bencic revealed how she feels about her current game. “I keep improving definitely. I think I have improved a lot in the past year and also this year.
I feel like my forehand is the best it’s ever been. Also my serve and definitely my mentality on the court. I’m much calmer than I used to be (laughs), for the most of the time. No pressure to me. I really try to do my best and also try to be more consistent to play well every tournament and give myself a chance to go deep in the bigger ones," Bencic said.
Bencic hopes to win a Grand Slam before retiring
Ever since Bencic won her first two WTA titles in 2015, she has been considered one of the best players in the game. Although Bencic has had some very notable results, she has yet to accomplish her dream of becoming a Grand Slam champion and reaching the world No 1 spot.
At this past Wimbledon, Bencic was inches away from sending Iga Swiatek home in the round-of-16. Unfortunately for Bencic, she missed out on two consecutive match points against Swiatek as the Pole won 6-7 (4) 7-6 (2) 6-3. But at just 26, Bencic definitely still has time to further improve her game and do some great things before retiring. It remains to be seen if Bencic can make her big Grand Slam breakthrough at the US Open.
