Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic has announced that she and her boyfriend Martin Hromkovic are expecting their first child. Bencic, 26, and former Slovak football player Hromkovic have been together since 2018. For the past couple of years, Hromkovic has also been Bencic's fitness trainer.
In a message posted on Friday morning, Bencic shared some happy news. "Expecting our little miracle soon! We can’t wait to meet you," Bencic captioned her Instagram post.
Bencic last played at the San Diego Open
After suffering a round-of-16 exit at the US Open, Bencic stayed in the United States to also compete at the San Diego Open.
In San Diego, Bencic picked up a surprise first-round loss to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. After San Diego, Bencic was scheduled to appear in some other tournaments but ended up missing all of them. According to some reports, Bencic picked up severe food poisoning in Guadalajara before withdrawing from the Mexican WTA 1000 event and also skipping the entire Asian swing.
This year, Bencic went 31-13. Also this year, Bencic won two WTA titles. Bencic made a great start to the 2023 season as she won the Adelaide International 2 in the second week of the season. In February, Bencic captured her second title of the year in Abu Dhabi.
Bencic was also a finalist in Charleston, where she was beaten by Ons Jabeur. When it comes to the Grand Slam level, Bencic reached the round-of-16 at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Bencic's most painful defeat at the Grand Slam level this year came against Swiatek as the Swiss missed out on two match points against the Pole in their Wimbledon round-of-16.
At The Championships, Bencic had two consecutive match points before Swiatek went on to claim a 6-7 (4) 7-6 (2) 6-3. Since Bencic is pregnant, it is safe to say that she will miss at least the first half of the 2024 season.
