A light can be a lifeline for the crisis that Stefanos Tsitsipas is experiencing. The Greek two-time Slam finalist is facing the darkest moment of his career, which is reflected in his game, in his results and, obviously, in his ranking.
From today, Monday 19 February, the Greek will officially leave the top 10 of the ATP ranking, something that hasn't happened for almost 5 years. A result that testifies to the difficulties faced by the former Monte-Carlo champion, who was overtaken in recent days by Alex De Minaur, thus falling to eleventh position in the ranking.
Tsitsipas, who has reached two Slam finals in his career, one in 2021 at the Roland Garros, and one in 2024 at the Australian Open, managed to reach third position in the men's world rankings. But the last year has not been lucky for him.
In 2023 he won two titles, in Mallorca, and Los Cabos. Not much, considering that many expected him to achieve much better results. There are many causes that have not allowed him to perform as he is capable of doing.
First of all, some physical problems, which have already been plaguing him for some time, especially his back. Secondly, the instability in his team. The Greek, after a period of distance from his father Apostolos, decided to call him back to his side.
Clay swing could be the answer for Stefanos Tsitipas crisis
The constant rumors about his relationship with the tennis player Paula Badosa, which many (haters, obviously) think has given a negative turn to his career, have also not helped his serenity on the court. Tsitsipas, also chased by Grigor Dimitrov, stuck in 12th position, will try to get back on top in the coming weeks, when two major events will take place close together which will offer many precious points up for grabs. The Greek, having not achieved great results in Indian Wells and Miami last year, will try to do well to regain the top 10.
But above all the clay swing will be the right time for Tsitsi to try to find good performances again, before even starting to climb the rankings again. I am still convinced that Greek finds its natural habitat on clay courts.
Tsitsipas should start to believe in the idea of being a top on clay, a surface on which he can only still improve and where he can, in my opinion, achieve excellent results, considering the type of tennis that is well suited to clay. In addition to the ATP Finals, the most prestigious results of the Greek's career have come from the red clay, with the double victory at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, in 2021 and 2022.
Without considering the final at the Roland Garros 2021, lost against Novak Djokovic when he was ahead by two sets. Tsitsipas must find mental solidity and rely on a coach who can improve his performances on clay, and I am sure that he will find great results.
