Tenerife Open: Jaqueline Cristian topples Tamara Zidansek in 1R

Two seeded players started their campaign at the Tenerife Ladies Open on Monday. And both seeded players crashed out in their respective opening rounds in the Spanish city. Romanian qualifier Jaqueline Cristian upset second seed Tamara Zidansek 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and nine minutes to reach the second round.

Cristian won 71% of her first-serve points to the Slovenian’s 61%. She also won a higher margin of second-serve points – 58% to Zidansek’s 48%. Cristian saved four of the seven break points, she faced while converting five break points herself.

For the match, the world no. 108 had 94 points to the 2021 French Open semi-finalist’s 78. In the second round, Cristian will play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. The Slovakian won against Zidansek’s compatriot, lucky loser Kaja Juvan 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 23 minutes.

Meanwhile, in the Chinese derby, qualifier Xinyu Wang upset her higher-ranked compatriot, sixth seed Shuai Zhang. Wang needed just 64 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Wang, ranked 114th in the world, won 75% of her first-serve points to Zhang’s 47%.

She also won 47% of her second-serve points to her countrywoman’s 40%. She was broken once but went on to break Zhang six times in the course of the match. Wang will play either Alize Cornet or Swiss qualifier, Stefanie Voegele in the second round.

Tenerife Open: Ann Li defeats Spanish hopeful

American Ann Li notched a comeback win over Spanish wildcard, Nuria Parrizas Dias in their first-round clash. After two hours and 26 minutes of play, Li won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Speaking with the press after her win, Li shared, “It was a battle, especially on a physical level.

I'm happy to have won. Continuing to believe in victory after the first set was essential (for me). In the second and third sets, I was able to play my game and be more aggressive point after point. I'm satisfied”. In the second round, Li will play either Varvara Gracheva or Spanish third seed, Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Irina-Camelia Begu also reached the second round of the Tenerife Open. The Romanian defeated Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 57 minutes. In the second round, Begu will play either eighth seed Alison Riske or Croatian qualifier, Donna Vekic.
