Ons Jabeur became the first Arab player to conquer the top 10 in the WTA rankings. The Tunisian reached the semifinals at Indian Wells last week and she earned eighth place in the WTA world rankings with merit. "This is a dream come true.
This is something I wanted. I've always wanted to get there, to be number 1 in the world. The Top 10, I know, is the beginning," Jabeur explained. The 27-year-old, after the match she won against Anna Kalinskaya, she answered a curious question at a press conference.
Because of her unpredictable and often surprising style of play, Jabeur has been compared, from the perspective of some hits, to Roger Federer.
Jabeur's statements about Roger Federer
"I've always loved Roger Federer's way of playing, especially his slice and his dropshot.
He has the ability to surprise you at any moment. Some fans and insiders like to draw parallels between me and Roger, which fills me with pride. To tell the truth, there are quite a few players on the WTA tour who have a pretty good touch, but they don't show it as often as I do.
I got congratulations from Roger after I beat Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon. It was a very nice gesture, I really appreciated it. These are the things that inspire me to work harder and fuel my hunger for victories." We remember that Federer closed his season prematurely due to the usual knee problem; problem that forced him to a new operation.
The Swiss will therefore return to the field in 2022 and will try to do his utmost to reach the top 10 again, lost for the first time since 2017 just last Monday. "I feel good, I'm recovering and have not had any relapses," Federer explained in one of his latest interviews.
"I improve every day and I feel strong and excited for the upcoming challenges. Rehabilitation is never pleasant, but I reacted positively. I hope to get back on the court as soon as possible, but patience is needed: it is a slow path and I have to proceed step by step. For now I'm doing well, so I'm very happy."
