Bad Homburg Open: Katerina Siniakova lifts maiden trophy on grass in Germany

Katerina Siniakova won the Bad Homburg Open on Saturday. The Czech defeated Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 7-6(5) in a little over an hour-and-a-half. Siniakova was the dominant player in the match right up to the ninth game of the second set when she served for the match.

However, her serve unexpectedly came up short and she let the Italian into the match. In the eventual tie-break, too, Bronzetti posted one more attempt at a comeback as she staved a trio of championship points. But Siniakova closed the door on her opponent firmly as she converted the win on her fourth championship point.

The 17-year-old led the tally of aces and double faults. She hit four aces to her opponent’s one and had seven double faults to the latter’s four. The world no. 52 also won 67% of her first-serve points to Bronzetti’s 55%.

However, the latter fared better when returning Siniakova’s second serve – winning 68% points. Siniakova saved just one break point of the four she faced but converted five of nine break points on Bronzetti’s serve.

She also finished the match with 16 winners although she had 11 more unforced errors, too.

Bad Homburg Open: Katerina Siniakova's singles triumph

This is the first title the world no. 1 doubles player’s won in the 2023 season.

Following this result, Siniakova now has a slender 1-0 lead in the head-to-head against Bronzetti. The Bad Homburg Open’s also the fourth singles crown Katerina Siniakova’s won in her career. Saturday’s final was the second time she’d made it this far in the WTA 250 tournament.

In 2018, she’d reached the final here but had lost to Angelique Kerber. This final was also the first she’d entered in almost a year. In 2022, Siniakova had played the Slovenia Open final in September. She’d defeated Elena Rybakina to win the title.

Meanwhile, Lucia Bronzetti was trying to win her second title this year. Earlier, she’d won the Morocco Open title in Rabat before the French Open.
