Mirra Andreeva crashed out in the second round of the Ladies Open Lausanne on Wednesday. Anna Bondar upset the sixth seed 7-6(6), 6-3 in an hour and 41 minutes. Bondar hit five aces while the teenager had none. The Hungarian also won 84% of her first-serve points to Andreeva’s 64%.
Bondar won 48% of her second-serve points while Andreeva won 52%. Bondar saved four of six break points she faced while converting three break points on Andreeva’s serve. Both players traded breaks in the first set before its outcome was decided in the tie-break.
The world no. 60 will now play either Sara Sorribes Tormo or Tamara Zidansek for a chance to reach the semi-finals.
Ladies Open Lausanne: Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Elina Avanesyan advance
Second seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto made it to the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Julia Riera.
The Italian needed two hours and 36 minutes to defeat the Argentine. Cocciaretto won 55% of her first-serve points to Riera’s 53% and 50% of her second-serve points. She also won 59% points on return on her opponent’s second serve.
Both players had four double faults each but while Cocciaretto didn’t hit a single ace, her rival had six of them across the match. This is the fourth quarter-final Cocciaretto’s reached this year. Earlier, she’d reached the quarter-finals in Mexico, in Monterrey and Merida, and had also made it to the final of the Hobart International in January (lost to Lauren Davis).
Elina Avanesyan also moved into the quarter-finals with a three-set win of her own after two hours and 15 minutes of play. Avanesyan lost the opening set but clinched a comeback win over Chloe Paquet, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Avanesyan and Cocciaretto will play each other for a chance to reach the semi-finals.
Lastly, seventh seed Alize Cornet won her first-round match at the Ladies Open Lausanne. The Frenchwoman also made a comeback after dropping the opening set against local favourite, Viktorija Golubic 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes.
