Russian wunderkind Mirra Andreeva reveals she would like to have a conversation with Maria Sharapova and also highlights her goal is not to be the next Sharapova but to follow her own path. Andreeva, who turned 16 in April, is widely considered one of the most talented and promising players in the world.
This season - in her first couple of tournaments on the Grand Slam and WTA 1000 stage - Andreeva made some notable results as she made the round-of-16 at Wimbledon and Madrid, while she also reached the French Open third round in her debut.
Andreeva, who also reached a career-high ranking of No 57 earlier this month, reminds of Sharapova, who also started making great results at a very young age. Sharapova, a former five-time Grand Slam champion, was 17 when she won her first Slam at 2004 Wimbledon.
Andreeva wants advice from Sharapova
“I’d like to ask Maria what her feeling was like when she won her first Grand Slam at 17. Then I’d want to know other things, but the first thing would be to know what she felt after she won Wimbledon in 2004.
People may say, perhaps, that I’m following her path & doing the same as her, but I don’t focus on that. I have my own career, my own life. I will only do my best to create a great career," Andreeva told CLAY magazine, via The Tennis Letter.
