Rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva, 16, reveals she is trying to learn from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and just try not to get too upset when mistakes happen on the court. Andreeva, ranked at No. 57 in the world, is one of the most talented and promising young players on the WTA Tour and she stepped up on Sunday to help Team Eagles win the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi. Andreeva and Sofia Kenin were 2-5 down before winning the next five games to upset Badosa and Sabalenka and claim a big win for the Eagles team. At 2-5, Andreeva and Kenin lost the game after a double fault was called - they challenged the call and the ball turned out to be in. Andreeva and Kenin then went on to save three match points en route to winning the last five games and completing a win.
“After the double fault, I thought it’s over, but we challenged and it was in, so we were very happy. Sometimes I get upset when some things don’t go my way. I think about those mistakes and it’s all the heavy thoughts in my head. Now I’m trying now to just let it go. if I miss it okay, even Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal also miss. So just let it go," Andreeva told Gulf News.
Andreeva on competing at the World Tennis League
Former world No. 4 Belinda Bencic signed up to play at the World Tennis League but withdrew from the tournament after announcing her pregnancy in November. Andreeva, who made the Wimbledon round-of-16 as a qualifier this year, was named as the replacement and she ended up winning the title with Team Eagles.
“When they first told me that that I’m going to be a replacement in the WTL, I was wondering who’s going to pull out from this tournament? But Belinda Bencic pulled out and I got a chance to play. I was super happy that I will be playing with Andrey, Daniil and Sophia. I didn’t really know them well but I am just enjoying being around them as it’s my first big exhibition tournament,” the 46th ranked Andreeva added. “My goal for the new year is to go higher in the ranking, which will get more attention," Andreeva said.
