Leylah Fernandez denied Katerina Siniakova her second WTA trophy for 2023 and clinched a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph for herself in the finale of the Hong Kong Open on Sunday. The match-up finished after a little over two hours and 45 minutes.
Fernandez had been methodical in her performances all throughout this week and against Siniakova, her performance was no exception although she was a little late in starting to do so.
Hong Kong Open: Leylah Fernandez's last hurrah!
However, after Siniakova pocketed the lead in the match, Fernandez went about turning the match around in her favour. To give credit to the Czech, although she herself was troubled with an injury to her left leg, she didn’t let off Fernandez easy and made her rival work hard for every point.
In the end, the titlist had scored just one more point than the runner-up - Fernandez won 101 points to Siniakova’s 100. Her win at the Hong Kong Open will allow Leylah Fernandez to climb 17 spots in the WTA rankings when they’re updated on Monday, 16th October.
She will now be ranked 43rd in the world. Following this win, Fernandez has now an active streak of three titles in three straight years, dating back to 2021. Overall, she’s also won three WTA tournaments so far.
