Jil Teichmann was upset in her first-round match on the opening day of the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca. Russian qualifier Anastasia Gasanova came from a set down and saved two points to oust the fourth-seeded Swiss, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 in two hours and eight minutes.
Gasanova won 69% of her first-serve points to Teichmann’s 63%. And while Gasanova was able to save only two of the seven break points she faced, she also broke Teichmann eight times. For the entirety of the match, Gasanova finished with 98 points, 16 more than Teichmann’s 82.
In the second round, Gasanova will play Ukrainian qualifier, Lesia Tsurenko. Tsurenko defeated Romanian wildcard Andrea Prisacariu, 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 23 minutes. Tsurenko’s compatriot, the eighth-seeded Anhelina Kalinina also advanced to the second round.
Kalinina defeated Dutch qualifier, Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-1, 6-1 in 62 minutes. Kalinina won 76% of her first-serve points to Pattinama Kerkhove’s 19%. She saved four of the five break points, she faced and converted six of the nine break points, on Pattinama Kerkhove’s serve.
In the second round, Kalinina will play Anna-Lena Friedsam. The German defeated Romanian qualifier, Alexandra Ignatik 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 51 minutes.
Transylvania Open: Ajla Tomljanovic avoids an upset
Fifth seed Ajla Tomljanovic also took her place in the second round on Monday.
The Australian won against Anastasia Potapova, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in two hours and 27 minutes. Tomljanovic won 67% of her first-serve points to the Russian’s 61%, converted six of the 10 break points, she had on Potapova’s serve and saved six of the 10 break points, she faced.
In the second round, Tomljanovic will play either Romanian wildcard Jaqueline Cristian or Kaja Juvan of Slovenia. The only Romanian to reach the second round on Monday was Ana Bogdan, who defeated Ivana Jorovic 7-6(1), 6-4 in an hour and 41 minutes in their opening-round clash.
For a place in the second round, Bogdan will play either third-seeded Briton, Emma Raducanu or Polona Hercog of Slovenia. Germany’s Mona Barthel also reached the round-of-16 at the Transylvania Open. Barthel defeated Hungarian qualifier, Anna Bondar 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 31 minutes.
