Top seed Caroline Garcia reached the second round of the Abierto GNP Seguros on Tuesday. Garcia defeated Kaja Juvan 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes. The Frenchwoman won 88% of her first-serve points to the Slovenian’s 76%.
She also won 60% of her second-serve points and 57% points on return on Juvan’s second serve. Garcia faced only one break point across the match and went on to save it. She converted two break points on her opponent’s serve.
In the next round, Garcia will play Nuria Parrizas Diaz. The Spaniard won her first round against Xiyu Wang 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4.
Abierto GNP Seguros: Marie Bouzkova's short run
Second seed Maria Bouzkova crashed out in her opening-round clash against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on Monday.
The Slovakian beat Bouzkova, who took a wildcard to play this week in Mexico, 6-4, 6-2. Schmiedlova won 74% of her first-serve points to the Czech’s 54%. She also saved five of the seven break points she had while converting five break points on Bouzkova’s serve.
Schmiedlova will play American qualifier Caroline Dolehide next. Dolehide won her first-round match-up against Jule Niemeier, 6-1, 6-0 in 51 minutes. Fourth seed Elise Mertens also booked her place in the round-of-16. The Belgian took down Diana Shnaider, 6-0, 6-4 in 61 minutes.
Mertens won 91% of her first-serve points to Shnaider’s 53%. She also won 59% of her second-serve points and 61% of points on return on the teenager’s second serve. Mertens saved the two break points she faced while converting four of five break points on the world no.
94’s serve. Elena-Gabriela Ruse will be Elise Mertens’ next opponent at the Abierto GNP Seguros. The Romanian qualifier got past Camila Giorgi in their opening-round meeting. Ruse won 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 51 minutes against the Italian who won her fourth WTA title just last week, at the Merida Open (defeated Rebecca Peterson).
