Iga Swiatek insists she is focused on delivering a high level of tennis from the start until the end and noted that losing points on purpose is something she will never do. On Friday, top-seeded Swiatek destroyed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Rome second round 6-0 6-0.
Since the start of the 2022 season, Swiatek has had 31 bagel sets. After giving Pavlyuchenkova a double bagel in Rome, Swiatek was asked if she was sorry for beating someone without giving them a single game. "I mean, even if I would, I don't want to lose points on purpose.
It doesn't make sense. So I'm always going to be that kind of player who wants to win the next point. I think most of us have that kind of feeling, so yeah. In my opinion, like, the score doesn't really matter and it doesn't have any influence on my - I don't know - feeling on the court.
I'm just trying to play the best tennis no matter what the score is," Swiatek said, per Tennis Up To Date.
Swiatek on if she has ever been handed a bagel
Swiatek, who has established herself as a very dominant force, was asked if she ever lost a match without winning a single game.
"Well, I don't know if I lost 6-0, 6-0. Probably yes. Probably like when I was younger and I played against, like, older players. On WTA, I'm not sure. For sure I had matches that were, like, really one-way, especially when I started on WTA in 2019," Swiatek said.
Before giving Pavlyuchenkova a double bagel, Swiatek was five times close to achieving a double-bagel win in 2023. Earlier this year, Swiatek won five matches with just one game dropped. Against Pavlyuchenkova, Swiatek was even more ruthless as she didn't give the Russian a single game.
It remains to be seen if a dominant win over Pavlyuchenkova is just a start of a successful Swiatek title defense in Rome.
